Surgery to remove buried teeth - really worried!?
I am having an operation to remove my 3rd molars from underneath the gum, they never grew through and are risking damage to the other teeth. It is being done using a piezo handpiece.
They said there's a small risk of damage to the lower jaw nerve, and i've never had an operation before, i'm so scared i'm going to be damaged and live for the rest of my life with a wonky mouth! please help me what do i do? i'm terrified.
That can't be done - the teeth are at an angle such that that would not work.
Dont be worried, Yes there is a slight risk of hitting the nerve but it is very small risk, most dentists are experienced enough to know how to do this correctly and they do them all the time! Now if id does happen to damage the nerve, your not going to have a "wonky" mouth, you would lose the feeling in part of your mouth, but AGAIN this is VERY unlikely. The risk for the wisdom teeth displacing all the rest of your teeth is high so this is a very good idea to get them taken out.
Second, just for your information, they are not using a piezo handpiece to do this. A piezo is a tool that dental hygienists use to clean off plaque and calculus off your teeth, it is not an extraction tool for teeth.
